Connection Across Distance
By Oleksandra Adamova · Poltava
A view from one dormitory of Poltava Polytechnic to another: the U.S. flag symbolizes support and unity felt even across distance.
Open Project 1 imagesOpen Windows invites you to do something quietly radical: to stop, look outward, and truly see the world beyond the glass. Each photograph in this collection begins at a threshold, a window of a home, a classroom, an everyday place, and reaches toward the wider world. Together, these images form a living exhibition of shared humanity.
Open Windows is a collaborative photography and digital art project rooted in the belief that perspective is everything. The window is both the subject and the instrument. It frames what we choose to see. It holds the tension between the private world within and the vast world without. Through light, composition, season, and shadow, photography transforms an ordinary scene into something that speaks.
What emerges from this project is not simply a collection of photographs. It is a collective act of bearing witness to Ukrainian daily life, to resilience, to beauty found in familiar corners, to the ever-changing sky above a country that has learned to look at the world with new eyes.
Open Windows is a student-centered project, but its spirit reaches far beyond any classroom. It belongs to everyone who has ever stood at a window and felt the world on the other side.

The photo shows my garden last year, just as it was starting to turn green. My favorite tulips had already bloomed. It captures my favorite kind of weather — sunshine through the rain or just sun shower. Looking at it, you feel a sense of peace and warm emotions that are really a treasure.

This photo shows a rainy fresh morning in the mountains. I chose this photo because one day during a trip I simply looked out the window and saw this view that caught my attention and I decided that it was something I needed to keep in my gallery. The combination of the gloomy sky, the bright colors of nature and the stacked firewood creates a warm and cozy atmosphere that I want to preserve in my memory and feel again by returning in my thoughts to that morning. In this photo, for me, there is something very simple and real, as if time had stopped for a moment.
